Recently E-Bob Technical Services helped a family improve their Wi-Fi connection. They said their children were having difficulty getting a signal up-stairs and that the family TV on the main floor kept losing its connection.

Location

The first thing noticed was their router was located in the furthest corner of the basement because this is where the broadband cable connection came in to the house. The kids rooms were two floors above and over. Which is a long way for a Wi-Fi signal to travel through a house, especially 2G. Something a lot of people don’t know about today’s routers is that they usually have a 2G and 5G connections. The 5G is faster but doesn’t work as far. The 2G is slower but travels farther. E-Bob recommended that they move their router to a central location, possibly right near their TV.

Equipment Up to Date?

The next thing was to check and make sure all of their equipment was up to date. Wi-Fi routers use different protocols and there are always newer ones available. Their Wi-Fi router was a modern one, up to date, and was working well.

TV Wi-Fi Reception

E-Bob tested the speed of their Internet connection using an iPhone app. They were getting more than 100 MB per second and seemed to have a strong signal near their TV. We looked at their TV settings and could not find anything wrong. Most likely there was a problem with the Wi-Fi receiver in the television. E-Bob’s recommendation was to connect an ethernet cable from their new Wi-Fi router location directly to the TV.
